And yet their stock prices rocketed, not due to their performance but on an illogical “growth over profit” business philosophy. The emphasis was on investing in websites, offering online jobs and often reckless expenditure on state-of-the-art network components. Once these businesses had a sufficiently large customer base, so the theory went, the profits would follow.
Such was the anticipation underlying the idea of Internet business, that businesses would see their stock prices spiral when they simply appended an “e-“ and/or a “.com” to the company name. This shows how speculators were taken in by the external appearance, rather than the actual viability of the companies concerned.
The end of the boom can be pinpointed to March the 10th, 2000, when the NASDAQ shares index stopped climbing and then suffered a ’bear market’. It would appear that a large number of shareholders finally decided that the dot com companies were massively overpriced. Lower than expected sales results for Xmas 1999 probably made people realise that the hoped for returns for the dot coms were simply unrealistic. A further issue was the time lost through delays to websites due to projects running late and code errors in the sites, as well as non-user-friendly site layout.
Clearly hindsight is, as is well known, that most exact of sciences. However 10 years later, certain matters remain true. Money can be made by means of Internet business. But there’s no quick way to becoming an Internet millionaire. Using World Wide Web technologies, people are able to work from home in a range of online jobs and build up a successful Internet business. It won’t enable you to become a millionaire by next year, but it can give you a well-paid and interesting career.
